Just wondering if such a thing exists in the audio world? I have a usb transport.
I don't want a full blown firewire dac (I just want a digital signal from it to input it into my dac). Thanks, JG |

It's possible to make one but there is little point. USB has more than enough bandwidth.

![]() actually makes a helluvagood video /photo slide show server as well and only half kidding - I know more than a few local hi-end old-school audiophiles more than happy to spend several times the purchase price on a stand-alone transport limited to SPDIF & TOSLINK output

M-Audio Firewire Solo
I have no personal experience with it, but it appears to have S/PDIF i/o at up to 24/96, which is better than a lot of USB interfaces which are limited to 16/48. Last edited by dangus; 7th October 2009 at 10:08 PM. |

Sad thing about the common USB interfaces
There are plenty of s/pdif, usb and I2S reciever chips that'll take 192/24... ah well.I have an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile, and I love it to bits but I've no idea how it 'sounds' compared to other DAC's. Works well but drivers, ... well... hmm. There can be conflicts. If USB DAC's work without need for driver/software suites then I personally would prefer that. These firewire ones are meant for small studio use, so they double as mixers of a sort, and complexity never helps. |

You can write your own kernel module and firmware for a USB 2.0 microcontroller or FPGA that supports 24bit/192kHz with however many channels USB can reliably support. I actually have to check - I wouldn't be surprised if someone already did that.
