I detest captive leads, as well as the job of removing them and fitting IEC sockets. I recently bought another preamp and changing the dangling captive mains cord to take an IEC socket was the first job I did yesterday to make the equipment more user-friendly, but the job still remains a fag to do.
On the pic below, you can see the finished job. Where the socket goes, was already a little cover plate and the holes for the cover's selftapping screws matched that of the new IEC socket, but the opening was too small. I don't really want to use drilling or a powerfile to cut the socket's opening due to steel filings into the works. I checked my tools and found a hand nibbler which quickly did the cutting required. So I made up a new coverplate and milled the IEC pattern hole and only needed to do a small amount of nibbling on the pre's case. A bit of quick-drying etch primer on the new cover plate and the job was done. For the old captive cord's hole, I turned up a plastic plug. I would have liked to use a fused socket but space was too limited. bulgin |

Hand nibblers are useful to have around
