I have an old A3 size flatbed plotter that I used to use for pcb artwork many years ago. Now I would like to see if it could be converted to a pick and place machine for surface mount components. Does anyone know if someone has done this before? 99% of the parts I want to mount are 1206 size and it only needs to pick it and hold it in place on the board while I manually solder one end of the part, then I would go around and solder the other ends after it is finished.

about the closest thing I have seen is this:
http://hackedgadgets.com/2007/06/07/...place-machine/ using a taig mill, but it just places the part not hold it while you solder. the dificulty would be in getting the part centered on the pick up vacuum. if you can sort that, then you will pretty much have it made! nice idea. |
