I believe what you want to build is commonly called a "distribution amplifier".

I was using this to turn 1 set of preouts into 8 sets of preouts. It worked just fine. no distortion, and you can add 10 or more of these units in line to create even more jacks if you need.
I picked mine up for 4 bucks if i remember right at a thrift store, but $20 is worth it. It also transfers RCA video.
Also I should note mine says 'studio grade quality', noise cancelling, balanced inputs, ultra-wide bandwidth.
I havn't noticed no difference with it in-or-out of line.
