Can DIY audio be like Arduino

Have been reading the Arduino boards (DIY electronics) and the community embraces open source. Everything is given away and shared. Commercial shops provides a huge variety of components, kits and boards at very good prices. This is in contrast to our DIYAudio board, where wars erupt because someone copied a design. Comments?
