Is it correct that in a self-contained boom box (integrated speakers) of reasonable size, stereo is pointless as the speakers are so close together?

No.
In fact, the 'stereo' effect can be heard even using the seperate voice coils on a single DVC driver. |

I used to think it was but in fact it is much clearer than mono. Is one practical application of stereo width enhancement I think.
