Bill,
This place might be a good place to start http://mailman.se7ens.net/mailman/listinfo/usa. As I am based in the UK I don't know how active the list is, but might get you in contact with someone local. An alternative is http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/. Used to have a Tiger Super Six a few years ago but family and work commitments......... Dave |

Quite a few builders and combinations available.
Not interested in building a Coventry Climax, if I can help it. Any local clubs? Curious about building one on a budget and wanted to talk to an owner. What to avoid and such like. I am a prototype machinist and have built a few scratch motorcycle chassis but never a car. Is there a DIY 7 source? Thanks in advance, Bill Berndt |

My car has a Ford Zetec in it. Ford Duratecs are the new choice for many builders.
http://www.californiacaterhamclub.com and http://www.usa7s.net are the major clubs for US Caterham owners right now. The biggest pitfall is the CA registration process. You have to register as a specially constructed vehicle then acquire a SB100 smog exemption. Only 500 exemptions are granted annually, and those tend to be gone by noon on the first day DMV is open in each new year. If I were to attempt a budget build, a miata drivetrain would be my likely starting point. A google search for the term "locost" will get you started in the DIY Se7en arena. As a machinist you may be interested in the motorcycle engined variants. Email me if you have any other questions. I nearly missed this thread entirely. best regards, Paul |

If it's the look that you're after, and you're as handy as it sounds, you might check out the "Locost" which is an entire movement/club that has sprung up around Lotus 7-like vehicles that are homebuilt and very cheap. The Caterham is home assembled, at least in one version, and not cheap. - pat
