have a closer look at the Schuko plugs ( CEE 7/4, 7/7 ) and CEE 7/17. These are symmetric and can be plugged the one or the other way into the Schuko wall socket.
So the equipment never knows on which wire it should expect live and, of course, any decent designed equipment doesn't need to know about it.
