Im sorry to say that theres not much in the way high-end audio shops or surplus/electronics outlets. Hard to believe considering the large population and excess cash to be spent. I left there after 12 years and have a ton of places to choose from now in Oregon. Most of the sales are HT geared and the big electronics chains do the selling. There are a couple of tiny shops but they only carry a couple of brands and not even an entire line. Most of us either mailorder or go to San Diego/LA to listen/purchase the good stuff.
But I can recommend some excellent entertainment though. LV is home of the worlds greatest cover band- YELLOW BRICK ROAD. I know the name sounds like an Elton John deal but they are MASTERS at reproducing classic rock songs. The guitarist, Mark Cole, can duplicate, and I mean flawlessly, David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, just to name a few. The singer can mimic Roger Waters to Nancy Wilson perfectly. The bassist and drummer are equally talented. The first time I saw them I thought it was hard rock Millie Vanilli. Wrong. These guys could stand in for Pink Floyd. They play at Boulder Station and the Sun Coast casinos which both have very good sound systems. You HAVE to see em. Im pretty picky and Ive seen them 12 times. Plus the shows free and the drinks are cheap. (damn why did I leave??...) have fun!

Both good companies. The HDTV images should be fun to watch this year. Its been a few years since I’ve been able to go now. Current job has me doing lots of data transport, not so much video, even less audio.
I was thinking you might be going for AMS or SSL, but I guess that proper lighting isn’t as big an issue for the audio guys.
Assuming you haven’t already spent a couple of months working there on previous trade shows a few suggestions for diversion: You should see if you can make it to the Richard Petty Driving experience. For a fee you get the opportunity to do a few Laps at good speed in an impressive NASCAR car. Certainly not as much fun as driving a Porsche, but fun nonetheless. Hoover Damn used to have a great tour, but I think that’s all closed off with security now. Renting a car and driving out of the city into the desert is also very worthwhile. Its phenomenally beautiful, I’d recommend getting a map and heading to one of the small towns in the surrounding hills.
I also understand that there are a few places out there for gambling and such. The staging for the Celine Dion show is supposed to spectacular. Production quality on Vegas shows is usually tough to beat. Weather you like her music or not, I think the $200 show ticket is likely worth while. I understand they are using a brand new SSL desk for the house mix.
If you can get to Yolie’s Brazilian Steakhouse you’ll get a good meal. Lots of meats. Watch out for the lines though. I’m sure that more than once Ive had to wait 2+ hours to be seated
Will you be using any wiggle lights, or will it just be a standard compliment of multi-broads and par cans? If you get the chance take a few pictures for us cube dwellers. I bet the video thread would love to see some of the LED video walls and ¼ million dollar video projectors.

Yeah, last year when I was out MacCartney was playing at the MGM, but I didn't see the show, just had a few beers with some mates on the crew.
I have even more fun, I have been a veggie for 12 years, and trying to find somewhere that doesn't just do surf and turf is a challenge!

Yup, a regular haunt of mine, it seems like I spend about 2 months a year there doing various events
But ITVS was better, on the banks of Lake Geneva in Montreux, a great place, good food, good beer, views to die for, and the ideal place to use "Smoke on the Water" as a ringtone on my mobile phone

I had an escort that eventually became my bad weather car, but once the carburetor gave out, I junked it. I still regret that too, at 14 years old it was the perfect, "I don’t care if you hit me with your Lexis" car. That and a good sense of humor seem to be my best defense driving in DC, which cant be anywhere near as bad as London. I suspect they both have more than there share of type-A's.
The Japanese noodle place in Caesars Forum is also real good, with little to no waits. Seems like every time I tell someone about Yolie's there either vegetarian or vegan.
I haven’t heard that Meyer or Genelec are releasing anything new, but worth visiting, just incase.

NAB is just too much - especially since we usually have a pre-conference event too. 10 days total two years ago.
Attendence is way down too. Exhibitors were given much larger spaces than they booked to make the show look full. My brother's company almost doubled for no extra fee.
I second the recommendation for the race car driving - open wheel and stock car types are both offered, so depending on your preference, you can drive faster than usually sane. DC has traffic like most large cities, but worse in many ways since our traffic laws are mostly not enforced (except for parking - that they do very well).
How many board members live in the DC metro area? I see that Dave lives pretty close to me (Crystal City).

But before booking the tickets threw an unknown broker, try contacting venue directly. Its likely a lot safer.

If I stand up in my cube, I can almost see X-tal City from hear. Must be a tough place to live for an audiophile. A friend’s neighbor called the police on him the day he had his piano delivered. No knock on the door or courtesy call, just sent the cops. Guess they didn’t like Rockmoninoff.

Crystal City is not good for volume. I just moved here from a house where I didn't have to care about it. Now days, the only place I can listen loud is the car... Or when I get to invade a production space - some of which have systems that I drool over.
