I'm going to be buying a place that has "acoustic ceiling". I was unsure to strip it off or not (or maybe just leave it in the listening room). Does it have any significantly beneficial acoustic properties?

Little or no benefit. If it was done before the 70's-80's, it is probably asbestos.... If it is painted, it has absolutely no benefit, and it is harder to strip.

Lay flat on your back and stare at in very oblique light.
Your eyes/brain don't like it and it begins waving. It is used to hide lumpy looking ceilings. you might find yourself re-applying it to hide the poor workmanship.
