Default Visiting Sacramento-Good Stops?

I'll be visiting Sacramento in August for a few weeks and I'm hoping I can get some pointers on some good places to go as far as audio, especially vintage and DIY. I'm not sure how much time I'll have; I'll be there for a military school. I'm from North Dakota, so I'm looking forward to the "big city" visit (at least for a while; too much traffic is one of my least favorite things!).
I hope to find some stores that sell audio DIY kits and DIY speaker parts. Maybe some decent thrift stores or the like. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks.
Mike

Hi Mike -

Lived in SacTown for many years and retired from one of the military bases there back in '99. If you are going to school out where McClellan AFB used to be then HSC Electronics is a good store for parts and electronics salvage stuff (chassis - fans - power supplies - junk - etc.)
http://halted.com/commerce/info/contactinfo.jsp

BTW - they keep the discrete high dollar parts behind the counter so you might need to ask for them. If you are looking for something special they might be able to order it now and hold it for you until you visit - or mail it to you.

IF you are in town thru 19 Oct. then there is the "Burning Amp" gig over in SF to check out and swap stories and stuff - and if you are real lucky maybe Papa Nelson will stop by and play Santa again. That might depend on if the entire state has burned down to the ground by then, and if Papa has anything to be "donating" to the cause (or not).

I don't know of any good DIY stereo stores around (anymore) - but maybe some of the local DIY folks will tune in with some suggestions.

I didn't know that there were any military schools left in Sacto - heck they closed down all of the bases years ago!
