Hi everyone,
I am a complete newbie. I'm looking for advice as to where I should buy components and parts for pro audio projects that I intend to pursue. I live in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. I am starting from scratch. I bought a text book to learn the basics and now I'm ready to start my first project, but I have nothing -not even soldering equipment -and I'm not sure what's available near my location. My searches so far have been useless. I appreciate any helpful suggestions!! -Jerry |

But the companies are a good start. Peace, Dave |

Take a look in the yellow pages under electronics... there's probably some store that caters to the TV repair & install/mobile radio/whatever market. You can expect to find a limited range of electronic parts (though more than Radio Shack), some of the ECG or NTE replacement series, a wide selection of connectors and switches, Hammond cases, Piher potentiometers, and generic speakers. They'll probably be part of a small chain and be able to bring in other stuff from another branch, and may not be open on Saturday. Not a bad place to look at soldering stations and pick out tools.
Radio Shack aka The Source has some good "flush cutters" (for cutting component leads after soldering) that work as well, and last at least as long, as name brand stuff. Digikey is the best choice for parts in general, since they ship to Canada very cheaply and quickly (about $8 and sometimes it'll arrive overnight!). With any supplier that ships from the US by courier (like UPS) you run the risk of getting hit with brokerage fees which can be $50 on top of the shipping charge and GST, so if possible get them to ship by mail. Electrosonic is Canadian, although lately they haven't had much of what I was looking for in stock... they may have a store that does counter sales within driving distance. http://www.apexjr.com - Steve is an awesome guy to deal with.
http://www.tubesandmore.com - Very respectful of Canadian customers and avoid a courier unless weight and size (or request) demand it. http://www.planet10-hifi.com - Vintage and new speakers, crossover parts. Easy to deal with and fast shipping. http://www.creativesound.ca - Speakers, boxes, crossover parts. Chat your ear off if you phone (in a good way). Friendly and reasonable. My commercial site (in sig) has some parts and this and that Cheers! |
