I had to drive a truck through a major southern wine production region last week.

Saw once forested fields now boringly rolling over the horizon in all directions carpeted in grape vine – to produce fruit not to eat, but for the production a horrible liquid that tastes like Panadol syrup and causes brain damage and impotence.

Makes a lot of sense, not.

I've got a similar opinion of most Aussie wine.

Thank you, Cary Nation.

I have an equal dislike of dry wines and flat response. Give me a nice semi-dry Riesling and push the equalizer into a moderate "smile". OTOH, I've yet to find a cheap Cab that doesn't taste like a cheap Cab.

No, wine is NOT like audio, but that doesn't stop the marketing people from trying to convince people that they are similar.

A few observations:

There is no difference between a wine snob and an audio snob. In fact, there is a direct correlation between the cost of an audio system and the owner's propensity to spend stoopid amounts of money on wine.

The "I have more, therefore I deserve more" feeling of entitlement that makes those individuals superior to persons of lesser financial means renders them more highly in tune with their senses, both hearing and taste, at least in their own minds.

Audio snobz with money ALWAYS become wine snobz, but wine snobz, who ALWAYS have money, don't always become audio snobz.

I take great comfort in the fact that neither the audio snobz nor the wine snobz will ever be happy. ***** them all.

A lot of people in this country pooh-pooh Australian table wines. This is a pity as many fine Australian wines appeal not only to the Australian palate but also to the cognoscenti of Great Britain as well.
Black Stump Bordeaux is rightly praised as a peppermint flavoured Burgundy, whilst a good Sydney Syrup can rank with any of the world's best sugary wines."

I expect you know the rest.

Ditto, SY, for the California stuff - but then we only get a small selection over here (and it's probably the bottom end anyway).

Ahh, Bruce, I thought you'd make an appearance.

Being a cheapofile in both audiphillia and vinophillia, I appreciate the fact that a cheap wine can taste as good, if not better than an expensive one. Generally this is true only for the first few years of bottle aging. After about 10 years in the cellar, the expensive wines have a bit of an advantage over the less expensive varieties, simply due to the way the wine is made. But again, this is only a generalisation. I've just bought a dozen ff a $20/bottle wine to lay down for 20 years for all my nieces and nephews to have when then reach maturity (OK, for the nephews, when they're over 18). It runs rings around most of the more expensive varieties available from both hear and o/s.

But, in almost all cases (heh heh), wine is made to be drunk. A lot of the higher priced audio pieces (mid car prices and up) are designed as three-fold items - audio, art, and "my schwarz is bigger than your schwarz".

Well shootz. I always thought of myself as an audio snob, but not a wine snob. I tend to buy wine big, red & cheap. Darn.
Oh wait, I don't have money, so the above doesn't apply. And I build and/or modify all my audio gear from low to moderate priced parts. Drat! Cheated once again. Just when it all seemed in reach.......

But seriously, the obvious differences aside, WHY is wine not like audio?
