Standard opamp design, with conventional volume control. A 3 band tone control would be integrated with a defeat switch.

What I've built
2 seperate phono stages (soon 3) -> selector -> TVC -> poweramp
4 line level -> selector -> TVC
Buffered line out (for recording)

1. feels kind of unfair. No option for just amplification. Obviously, a preamp that is attenuating, not amplifying, is not an amplifier per se. (Sorry 'passive preamp' guys, it's true.)

2. As many as needed. You might only need one for gain, or ten for mixing multiple instruments together in a recording.

3. b., 2 channels; but this again depends on needs...

4. b. unnecessary IMO, but convienient if you want to put in the trouble.

5. c. (if something's worth doing, it's worth doing right!)

6. a.

7. d., but I'm biased :) (c). should be acceptable in theory.

8. I covered this in a thread on the tubes forum (My Preamp). - Am awaiting pots so I can get on with the project. :)
