OK, so your Internet connexion is alive.
Is your W7 licence activated ?
What browser do you use ?
Do you have a firewall installed ?

I can't remember if Win7 is activated. How do I check?
I'm using IE for the update. I discovered when I opened this thread that using other browsers can stop update.
I normally use Firefox.
How do I check Firewall?

Something you can try with the XP PC:

Restart it and as it is booting up, keep hitting the F8 key until it brings you to a list of options.

Choose: Safe Mode with Networking.

When all is loaded up, go to IE and click on "Tools" and then in the dropdown menu, click on Windows update.

Go through the steps of any updates recommended and hopefully that will get you started in the right direction towards a stable PC until you extract what you want.

Then run any Virus scans you have installed.

Then download and run the free version of Malwarebytes: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Download

After you extract all you want onto the new PC, then wipe the HD, reload XP, drivers, apps and all the updates and it will perform like new again! Still a great backup computer

W7 activated : Explorer / Computer Right Click on "Properties" (approximative as I have French W7)

IE is natively associated with Windows Update service, lauched when you type "windows update" in Start / Execute menu.
Forget Firefox for Windows Update services. Great for other surfing purposes.

Firewall (internal W7 service) : Start / Execute type "services.msc" and then browse "firewall".
Are you runing another protection utility ?

You can stop it for a while, automatic start activated by default.
Could be slightly different as I've got French W7 version... approximative traduction

I don't understand the firewall checking instructions.
Where is start execute?

I have freeware AVG.

Next question : do you have another protection utility running ? (except internal W7 Firewall)

When you click on Start you've got an empty zone where you can type commands such as searching programs and/or files.
Try to disable AVG during your update attempts.

Yes that's the correct zone but forget about it by now.
Try first to disable AVG and check if your Windows Update is running OK.

I opened AVG.
I can't see how to turn it off.
Most of the features are "active".

You might have an AVG icon in the right section of the bottom task bar, try to right click on it.
I don't use AVG... try to read the FAQ section - about disabling temporarily the app - on the editor website.

I have AVG shortcut icon on desktop. That's what I opened.
But I can't see a menu to switch off or disable or shutdown

I know if I do CTRL+ALT+DEL I will be able to see all the files that are running, but AVG has lots of entries.

Since I have a wide screen I have moved the bottom bar to the side.

You've launched the application, but it stays/remains resident as it starts automatically.
Have a look about disabling temporarily the app on the FAQ editor website.

I'm sorry Andrew but I've to leave, I'll check tomorrow your progresses.

After disabling AVG protection, try again your Windows Update service.
If it doesn't work, something is broken and I might suggest you to have a look there :

google found that as first hit.
Now all the features are red.
Until restart.

I will retry update, but I will shut down here first.

Yes AVG is disabled until I do a restart.
All the features are now red.

win update failed via IE.
