It's hard to tell if it's the digital format or other losses down the copy-way.
If you ever heard an analog tape master (and I guess that holds true for a digital high resolution master as well), you can burst out into tears how much better this is (in a reasonable good setup).
There is a collaboration of the austrian quinton label and german Analogue Audio Association where they make early master tape copies of some chosen realeses.
