I built a passive preamp with a shunt resistor. Problem is that with a 10K resistor I have way too much gain. With 16K I have decent gain, but it seems cold/sterile and very bright (listeners fatigue easily attained with this one). With a 20K it seems rolled off too much. I'm using it with a Aleph 30. Any suggestions on what resistor to use?
