Default Recent change with Mouser shipping

Just a heads up for folks ordering stuff from Mouser.

So, I order lots of parts from the big suppliers, usually one order/week or so from both Digikey and Mouser, plus various other vendors.

When I need a delivery from DK or Mouser quickly and the weight is not that great, I choose USPS Priority Mail, which I find to be quite cost effective and faster (2-3 days) than either UPS or FedEx Ground (usually 1 full week).

So, last week I needed some resistor for a pending order, so I needed than relatively quickly. I ordered from Mouser and spec'd "Priority Mail/w Tracker" on the checkout page from the shipping type drop-down, as usual. Invoice says same.

Turns out, they have a new policy whereby they automatically, depending on distance, send USPS orders via DHL instead, which is supposed to be as fast and provide better tracking. It's not, and does not. This is a new service from DHL and USPS called DHL@home. There is tracking, but now my package has taken a week to arrive (still not here yet, actually), rather than the normal 2-3 days. Also, the tracker doesn't even estimate an arrival time, so how is it better than USPS? Also, there is nothing about this on the site; I found out from customer service (which as always are very helpful folks, seriously).

My plan is, in the future, to specifically request that this service not be used, in the "Special Order Instructions" textbox. Hopefully that will work. I will report back.

Yes, I experienced this as well. Horrible! It took about 8 days to get a small order of resistors.

I don't mean to flame, but has anyone actually had good results with DHL? I worked at a place where I was involved with shipping, and we had someone internally who pushed us to switch to DHL because they were supposed to be "better" for international and fast domestic shipping. I *never* had so much grief from a shipper! I've never had a lost package from UPS or FedEx, and didn't even think that was a risk! DHL reminded me that it is not, in fact, a given that your package will reach its destination.

In Canada Purolator is to be avoided like the plague. Nothing but nightmares: just as an example they once delivered a co-worker's application to grad school three weeks late on an overnight envelope. Of course he missed the deadline by two days. And, similarly with DHL/USPS, Canada Post chose Purolator as their partner.

That suggests a rule of thumb: if a delivery company is so useless they have to partner with the postal service to drum up business, snub them smartly.

I've also had terrible results with FedEx through Berkeley. Other places are OK, but the Emeryville office (which serves Berkeley and North Oakland) is staffed by hooting apes.

Slightly off topic. . . .shipping is hit or miss in the world of cutting costs!

Besides DigiKey and Mouser: what are other reputable parts suppliers?
