Just heard of Space Shuttle disaster...
My thoughts go out to all the astronauts and their families.

What a horrible thing to wake up too.
![]() First thots go to the astronauts and the families for their very personal loss... but this is also a great loss to all of humanity -- to all of us. The endeavor to establish the human race out of the gravity well has suffered a huge setback. A very sad day. dave planet10/whose flag is set to half-mast

Yes it is sad and yes, it is spectacular news, but am I the only one
thinking that this thread is loosing proportions somewhat? The loss of human lives is always sad, but if we are to make any distinctions at all, as this thread does, then let's not forget that these seven people had volunteered to go on a high-risk mission. If making any distinction at all, I would tend to feel more sorry for those 30+ who were just going on a train journey in Zimbabwe earlier today, or those 8 or 9 australians who were probably just taking the commuter train to go home from work as they used to do everyday, or those 6 who died in a recent bus crash here in Sweden, or... |

I agree with Christer to a point.
No 1 life is more valuable than any 1 other life. I think high profile tragedys are of course going to receive sympathy from a larger cross section of the population. The deceased astronauts families are going to be devestated to an extent that I cannot pretend to understand, at the same time I think that they can always be proud of their lost family members knowing that they were advancing science for all of humanity. Just my thoughts. KevinLee |
