Volume control on McIntosh c28 Preamp

I just bought a c28 preamp at an estate sale (great deal) and it seems to work OK except for the volume control. It isn't progressive, but has a few large steps of loudness at very distinct places on both channels. I cleaned the vc well with spray and it isn't scratchy any more, but the notches are still there with a very big one at 3 o'clock. It doesn't seem like a mechanical issue as I can't make the volume change by pushing on the control stem when it's right on the cusp of an increment. I'm reluctant to put in a new control because I'm not sure if this is the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Can you a company name and/or the value of the potitiometer?
