And Georgia is a Southern state. Deep South. It is one of those places Americans usually go to in order to be warm in the winter!
Those amazing temperatures are in Fahrenheit. ATLANTA (AP) Even though roads were clear of snow, sleet and ice Friday, schools around Georgia closed because of brutal cold. School officials and parents didn't want children who were not used to such temperatures waiting for buses or walking to school in temperatures below 10 degrees. Folks in Western Australia should have been expecting it.
You have held the World Record for the hottest summer for over 75 years. "Longest hot spell (world): Marble Bar, W. Australia, 100 °F (38 °C) (or above) for 162 consecutive days, Oct. 30, 1923 to Apr. 7, 1924." http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2000/MichaelLevin.shtml 90 degrees F must seem like a cold snap.

Interestingly, the global warming effect could bring about BOTH extreme drought in Australia and extreme cold in Canada & Northern Europe.
This is because the melting icecaps dump huge amounts of fresh water into the oceans, which stuffs up the currents and stops the warm water from the tropics circulating around northern American continent & Europe... Apparently this current has declined by 20% in the last 50 years or so... Without the warming effect of the current, Canada and northern europe would turn into Siberia. Ironically, global warming could bring about an ice age!

Trees add a ring of growth every year. When it is a warm year, the growth is thick. In cold years, the groth is thin. Analysis of tree rings from preserved trees show that just before Ice Ages occur, things get very warm, then turn cold. Suddenly. within a decade or so. I'm not saying that is what is happening now, just mentioning what the record indicates. |
