This is the passenger seat of my truck. It's the only way I can work.

same here. but make the cleanup around once a year.

exactly how I do things in my workshop. when friends come over to have something fixed, they often wonder how I find the tools in all the chaos.

so that means I vote for a messy workshop.

Likewise ... so when they ask "where's your screw drivers at?" or whatever, you say "right over there ..." pointing off into the ozone ... then encourage them to find whatever they are looking for by putting things away, taking out the trash, etc ... then when they are done fooling around and messing up the place further and gone and you can't find anything yourself anymore, out of necessity, you have to clean up put stuff away ... this may seem like a "Rube Goldberg" approach to getting the shop cleaned up, but it works ... except for the tools your "friends" have thrown into the trash ...

Actually, I've tried this three times since you posted and the place looks no better. I suppose I should just go with my Inner Slob and accept that my workshops will always look like disaster areas. The biggest improvement for me was keeping the cats out- no more surprise "hidden treasure" and many fewer broken tubes.

For non-Americans or those much younger than Jack or me,

Romper Room - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nancy Claster was a family friend. When my parents had her use my name with the Magic Mirror, I ran out of the room crying because I was just in my underwear and very embarrassed. I auditioned for the show, but refused to do it because I was worried that they'd put me in the TV of someone we didn't know and then I couldn't get home.
jeez this is so OT but i completely forgot how transfixed i was with this program when i was a youngster! must... youtube... now...

This subject cuts very close to home indeed. As an engineering tech who's job it is to support 6 engineers in the arena of the lab, I find that trying to keep things organized is a losing battle. Don't get me wrong, these guy's are top notch designers of electronics, but there is just something about the creative mind that has to have the "stuff" handy to touch and look at. Plus they tend to be in a hurry to find the answer, and "what's wrong with a little clutter anyway". Corporate has reciently started pushing the safety comittee to poke their nose in and make some changes, but it will never happen. The engineers tell them to bite. Is this true of artist's also?

A friend of mine told me that it´s better to have order in the mess than a mess in the order of things. Sage advice

I have gone to art school worked in engineering design consultancies and been an academic. Every where there was mess. I guess its necessary for creativity. We drove most of our accountants crazy...
When I work on a project I usually remember where I put everything. But when I am away for a few weeks and come back, it looks like a mess.

I'm a very organized guy, I've always had. Here my workshop at the present time, and this is with 5-6 projects going one. I need a clear space for my brain to work.

Your garage floor needs painting, the rags and bucket in the styrofoam cooler are dirty and your sawblade does not appear fully retracted.

Sheesh!
