Fair enough. Batteries (plural) will deliver that short term. Even with good efficiency in the PSU and amp you are talking of "1000 amps plus" current demand at 12 volts.

One of Nichrome's saving graces is that it's not supposed to have a huge variation in resistance with temperature (not like tungsten, at least), so I wouldn't expect a huge inrush current for a properly chosen heating element. Of course, it will help a lot to choose a element overrated for the power actually applied so that it doesn't get too hot, keeping the temperature (and resistance ) variation at a minimum.
