reading reviews on eevblog, I went for the mastech unit. its in the $200 range on ebay.
of note is that it goes up to 100khz for testing. many units stop at the 'standard' 10khz and some older ones don't even go much above 120hz or 1khz. comes with kelvin clips, opto usb pc interface, even comes with batteries ![]() I'll give it a review later on when I get some time. been wanting a good esr meter and this was my researched choice. hope it works as well as everyone says.

Nice, what is the stated precision/accuracy of this meter?

Extensive review and discussion here:
Mastech MS5308 LCR meter with ESR measurement - on discount at the moment - Page 1 Quite an informative read and education about affordable LCR meters in today's market. I've got a Dick Smith ESR meter that doubles as a low ohms resistance meter, but nothing for inductance. Somehow I never got around to getting a good bridge test set. Accuracy of this meter seems to be in the 1% to .5% range; very good for the price and features. Last edited by Damon Hill; 11th January 2013 at 04:13 AM. |

yup, I got the idea from eevblog
nice site to check, esp for test gear and actual user experience.I put a random resistor on the clips and measured it, then compared the reading to my fluke45. they were nearly identical (180ohm junk resistor I had lying around). so that's a promising first sign. its so big, its comical, though. I usually like large displays (helps older eyes see), but this is just funny. well, better to err on this side than the other, I guess.
