I am about to buy a hakko 936-12 workstation today from all-spec. This will be use for my diy audio projects.

http://www.all-spec.com/cgi-bin/fccgi.exe?w3exec=showitem&w3site=ALLSPEC&w3path=cat&w3product=936-12

I called them asking what extra tips and desolder tools they recommend. They person had no clue what I was even talking about and said she couldn't recommend anything.

I'm sold on the station. I think it comes with a 1.6mm chisel tip. What other tips would you guys recommend getting?

And recommendations on desolder tools. I was thinking about a braid. What width is recommended?

I am also buying stuff from digikey, apexjr, parts express, leeds, and goldmine today for GC parts. So I can just add to those orders.

Thanks
Matt

The Hakko is great: I have one and it delivers all it promises. Buy three tips at least: fat, mid and thin. The mid size is the tip you will use most. The thin one is great for SMD parts.

For desoldering, the only tool I recommend is the desoldering iron sold by Radio Shack. Be sure to buy two heavy-duty desoldering tips. Keep them clean.

This tool is the best for desoldering thin wires and not even heat the part, if you work fast. Let the tip get very hot before desoldering and do it using both hands. It's the best way to protect pcb pads.

Braids and other tools tend to make a mess of pcb traces and pads.
