I'm a hobbyist and had this soldering station for around four years. I've used it for multiple projects, but I don't use it on a daily basis. I've had a couple of instances lately where the tip would not get hot enough to melt solder. First time I replaced the tip and that fixed it. Today, it happened again; and the unit made a sort of low growling noise. Over the years I've inadvertently left it on over night, including a couple of days ago.

Questions, do these things wear out over time (from old age, or overuse)? If so, is there a recommendation for a better unit? I think they run about $80 new, so figure $20 a year is not too bad?

Could be the heating element inside the iron.
It will be replaceable though you will need a second soldering iron to do the replacement.
The element is seen when you remove the tip.
I believe from experience the elements may become intermittent.

That model is often copied by the cheap and nasty brigade.
At only 4 years old I'd wonder where it came from.
There's a you tube video pulling the genuine and copy versions apart.
No contest, genuine is the only way to go.
My hakko is near on 25 years old, copped a flogging, and has never let me down.
