I came across this short article on an audio distortion meter the other day:

Audio Distortion Meter Circuit with Diagram

I happen to have a couple of UTC VC15 variable inductors and am thinking about building this circuit. Have any of you built anything similar? Any idea how the circuit might perform in real life?

I have no idea about the specs of these vintage inductors, but they certainly use some kind of magnetic core, which means a distortion-meter based on them will only be useful for demo or educational purposes, not for real measurements of semiconductor gear, even the crudest ones.

It could be useful if you only want to measure the output stages of old radio sets, but a sound-card, even the lousiest one, will be easier to use and will vastly outperform such a THD-meter
