The best gift I have ever received Tektronix 2465

Carefull when replacing the PS caps. There are one or two where the silk screen does not match the orientation..... Use the orientation of the original cap and/or verify with the schematic.

Replace any Rifa X/Y cap (clear yellow plastic). They age, crack (also when not used) and go bang with a lot of smoke.

I replaced the above in mine, together with some fixes. But that one looks like it has had a lot of use. The good thing is that there are no leaky SMD caps in the plain 2465, unlike A and B models.

Write down the EAROM values (look in one of the service menu's), so you can restore the calibration settings if the EAROM fails. EAROM is an early form of EEPROM.

The 2465 is one of the finest analog scopes ever made. You do want to make sure that the battery for the memory gets refreshed.

I agree with the first sentense. But there is no battery in a plain 2465. It uses this EAROM i think.

Make sure you get probes where the 1:10 indicator works with this scope.

Hi,

Ive decided my current scope isnt good enough. Its a cheapo OWON and its very noisy. Theres a few tricks you can do to get a better trace but I think its a fault with these. Still useful for certain things and is portable although the FFT is a joke.

Anyway, It looks like a 2465 of some variant is the one to get for what im interested in.
Can anyone recommend the best place in the UK to get one of these and what the going rate is.

I dont think i need the extra bandwidth of the B version and of the extra options available on the slightly bigger versions maybe the DMM is handy.

Bit wary of buying scopes like this off ebay, not necessarily averse but a years warrenty would be good as it seems theres quite a bit to fail.

All those who say do not touch as long as it works
Today it happened. I used 2465
And suddenly, smoke, I turned off the TEK
I took it apart and saw it straight
the safety capacitors 5.6NF
it's Burnt
So get ready, I'm going to do what I originally ment to do
A comprehensive project for renewing the power supply

I got the same issue, it's common with those caps.
Those are not 5.6 but 68nF, X2 rated.
You probably also have the 15R resistor in parallel with NTC burnt.
If interested I can send you service manual and one link about those issues.

I know when I received it I planned to make a comprehensive renovation
Because I work a lot on
on SMP .

I have all the components of the power supply
I'm going to test all the capacitors for the ESR
Replace the smoothing capacitors
Replace all the X2 film capacitors
The circuits thet I most like to work on is power supplies.

What upsets in the TEK is to dismantle it.
Its power supply is really simple

I already said that I hate star screws.
I Dismantled the psu.
I changed the
the orininal Smoothing capacitors
to EPCOS 390UF 400V caps
Strange that the old capacitors were actually good
Even though they more then 20 year old
ESR 0.1 Ohm

The parts that were not good
In power supply

The X2 capacitors
the first one
68NF of course burned.
The other with high ESR
6 Ohm.

2 Bipolar capacitors
1UF
Were with high ESR
4 Ohm.
I switched to film 1UF
VISHAY.
I replaced most electrolyte capacitors.
By tomorrow I hope to finish.
Assemble back will be th
The real headache

I'm sorry but that's hack work! Yes capacitors fail. They are expendable components. But what's wrong with replacing them with the same part or at least an equivalent part.

Is this "it sounds better" at work again?

Think those film caps will work better? What do they do in the circuit? Did you analyze that? Remember that SMPS's work at ultrasonic frequencies, even into the low MHZ in some cases. Now you just added a lot of inductance with those big film caps and long leads!

There are many lesser products out there that can benefit from competent modifications. But Tektronix and HP are mostly above that. Their circuits are very well engineered. I for one would not consider any modification unless there is clear evidence of a design error. And I'm a 35yr EE who is certainly qualified. Perhaps it is that very experience that tells me to leave what works well alone.

What are you talking about?
Who heard me say that I changed the films because it's better?
Do not give me words I did not say.
This is not the first power supplier I worked on.
And not the last one.
Enter the projects that I have built and will see
Switching power supply
thet I build for my projects.
I replaced the bipolar in film
Because I have a lot of them in stock (1uf)
And I do not stock electrolyte capacitors at low uf values.
( And when I see that the capacitors have a high ESR Of course I will not leave them in a circuit )

Previously I used them
Without any problem.

For the cost of a BP 1uf cap, wouldn't you rather preserve the original design?

First you are substituting a component with different characteristics. There's more to capacitors than UF and voltage ratings.

Second, that just looks bad. One does not expect to see that kind of rework in Tektronix gear.

I only questioned the "sounds better" idea because a few posts back you wanted to replace diodes with a lower forward drop part. That is highly not recommended. Depending on the circuit function it could be disastrous to the operation of the unit, even cause some damage.

I didn't say change them for something different. I have a drawer full of (expensive) axial tantalums that I use as replacements. 20+ year old tantalums are like little time-bombs.

Today I added Heat sink to the UD800 Hibrid ic

and Cooling paste arctic cooling MX- 4
The temperatureon the
UD800 Hibrid ic has definitely dropped significantly.

All that remains is to check that all the voltages are calibrated
And I'm done :)
