Just wrote a web page about my soldering station project. I bought Antex SD50 soldering iron and did the controller myself. I used TI's MPS430f2132 processor.
It was rather easy to control the tip temperature, just checking the PTC resistor value at 100 ms intervals and turning fet on or off accordingly was enough to get stable temperature.
I don't know the T = f(R) function of the PTC, so i'm using it at 42 ohms temperature
