Default Need suggestions on oscilloscope

In order to take a more systematic approach to repairing and maintaining my audio equipment, I'm interested in picking up an oscilloscope, if I can do so cheaply enough. I assume my lack of budget ("as cheap as possible") pretty well limits me to a used unit. I don't need a really high-grade, sophisticated scope, as I'll only use it every now and then.

Any suggestions or advice about good oscilloscopes for newbies?

Also, it occurs to me that maybe there must be oscilloscope-like products on the market that work in combination with one's computer, and that maybe they're cheaper than stand-alone oscilloscopes . . . does anyone know of such a thing? And are they any good? . . . wait a minute . . . I just searched and turned up software and hardware such as the following:

http://www.picotech.com/
http://www.tiepie.nl/
http://www.ymec.com/products/raee/index.htm
http://polly.phys.msu.su/~zeld/oscill.html
http://www.designnotes.com/pcs64i.htm

Good grief! I haven't even gotten into stand-alone scopes and already there's quite a selection!

Thanks for any ideas,

CDWitmer

Default what's new in the Akhibara?

seems as if you should be able to find a nice Hitachi or Iwatsu there. I always manage to have a weekend over in Japan when I go on biz.

until you get over $1,000 the performance of a PC scope is not going to match an analog scope. Further, the older digital scopes really aren't bargains, and you will never be able to fix the problems if you encounter any.

the other problem, as I see it, for PC-incorporated scopes is that they tie up your PC -- I have mine right in the lab and use it constantly for programming PIC's, doing VB projects, using it for statistical analysis. well one of these days I will give my Tek 7704a the heave-ho for a TDS3014.

I haven't been to Akihabara in years, but I bet you'll do just fine there. Look for (at minimum) dual channel, 1 mV/div sensitivity, delayed sweep, and 50 MHz minimum bandwidth.

Over here, in the used equipment market, a scope like that will run maybe $200-300, refurbished and calibrated. I've got a Sekusui 6 channel 60 MHz job that ran me about $300.

Very nice site BTW, but not sure you'll find something about scopes.
