Splitting fresnels, location of rear fresnel

If i split my fresnels does the rear one (the one on the lamp side) actually have to be close to the LCD. My understanding is that in split mode the rear fresnel will simple parallelise the light.

Therefore, as far as i can tell, its distance from the LCD of this fresnel should make no difference, other than the fact that it may make the projector longer?

Have i got this right, or am i missing some subtle behaviour that may make this not the case?
