Since first getting projections working I've been working out the bugs (fixing light leaks, designing new frames, and improving cooling). During my redesign I opted for larger fans 80mm to 120mm. Only thing is that the only stuff I could find locally were 24volt panaflos. Instead of the usual quiet Panaflo, these 24v ones running at 12v are much too loud(but at least they do a great job of keeping things cool, I set up 2 opposite from each other which do a great job of cross circulating air over the lamp.
Trouble now is that they are overkill. I've tried 9,7,6,5,4.5 volts and they refuse to operate - even if I get them started at 12volt and then switch over. Unfortunately I don't have anything between 9 and 12 volts to test with - although I may try some batteries in series). Can anyone suggest 120mm fans that are quiet? I think the 24 volt thing is my problem - the 7volt computer power supply trick would be excellent for this. |

I got mine from www.surplusshed.com . They sell brand new 120mm 12v dc fans for $5. I run one at 9 volts, and it is super quiet and pushes a ton of air. I cooled one of the 300W halogen slide projection assemblies from surplusshed with it, and the whole metal assembly stayed cool to the touch!
