Simple question: How do I clean my fresnels? I wasn't as careful as I should've been while constructing my projector, so I tried cleaning them using lens paper, clothe, and other materials meant not to damage plastic. This worked to a point, but I decided to try and rinse them off. I should've remembered how many metals are dissolved in water, when dried there were water spots everywhere.
I've tried using distilled water to rinse, but the angled rings still have a microscopic layer which becomes apparent when projecting. What is safe? I've ruled out using the dishwasher(afraid they'll warp) and a number of chemicals which will eat the plastic. |

I used distilled water with few drops of dish washing agent, carefully cleaned the rings using a cosmetic cotton pad, then again with pure distilled water and didn't let it dry, but cleaned quickly with another, dry piece of cotton. And I also covered lens with glass, as cleaning it is a big pain. there is some light loss on the glass, but certainly less then on dirty lens.

A 10% Isopropyl alcohol to 90% distilled water mix.
Then use a Brand New soft bristle paint brush. Dip the fresnels in the mix and use the brush to ightly clean the grooves. Then use compressed air to blow them off , but be careful not to shake the can where it lets moisture come out with the air. Or you can let them air dry. |

now how do I get rid of those unsightly finger prints on my LCD? Will the same mixture work? |

thanks for the help everyone! I was able to put my projector back together with no problems(aside from swapping the fresnel order, whoops, but fixed that). In fact, the image looks much better than it thanks to my new setup holding my fresnels+LCD. No more dirty rings!

Very good for you! Let this be a lesson: when handling optics, *always* wear clean new rubber gloves!
