Quick disclaimer. I don't really belong here. Just wandered up from one of the audio floors. I don't even own any video equipment. But there is something I've always wanted to ask.

I have one of those ancient stereo-opticons in a drawer. I've also had, at some time or another, one of those little dual-lens instamatics that split the frame for 3d viewing. I can't remember if it worked well or not. Anyway, I've often wondered why a cheap video equivalent of this fairly simple concept isn't more often experimented with. With what is currently available to the tinkerer, how tough would it actually be to to gang together a couple of video cameras and run the image files simultaneously into a home-made pair of goggles using a pair of mini lcd screens?

It seems as if it would be so simple to do. Or is this just inexperience speaking?

There are special adoptors for shooting 3D videos on the cam corder. Such movies can be viewed on the CRT screen of TVs or Monitors but not on LCD Projectors. There are basically two handicaps. LCD is not suited for required synchronisation and the brilliance of the screen is so low that the images are very dim due to attenuation of light through the 3D glasses. This is possible with two LDC panels operating at high brilliance. The technological research is going on and lot of options are availble but at present are very expensive for home applications.
