Here's what I have

Even though I caved and bought an X1 back in December I'm still a DIYer at heart. That being said, I have a automotive DVD player/screen system that was given to me by one of my co-workers. It would seem that two new vehicles that were s'pose to have wireless headphones didn't. The entire roof mounted units had to be changed. The manufacturer never called back these warranty exchanges and anything not called back is to be disposed of. My co-worker (the shipping/receiving manager) offered me (the mechanic) one of them if I would install the other in his family's minivan. So now I have a complete roof mounted progressive scan DVD unit with 5.1 sound, aux video and sound input, and a flip-down screen with a wiring harness that is very solderable.

I've not been able to find the specs on the screen. Do you guys think it's save to assume that due to the nature of the unit that it is at least a 480p screen? Probably not. Well I'm off searching for some specs. Wish me luck.

I removed and disassembled the flip-down screen. The ribbon cable from the controller to the panel is about two inches long which will allow me to mount it horizontally on the bottom of the case betweem the bulb and panel. The panel itself is in a nice 1/4 inch thick plastic frame so I don't have to worry about damaging the edges. The backlight assy. just unplugged and came off with no problems. The LCD itself measures 6.25"x3.5" I still haven't been able to find any specs on it yet. I kind of thought there would be a FCC # somewhere inside the unit but I haven't found one.
I do have a couple of preliminary questions.
1. Should I put a resistor that is equal to the backlight resistance in place of the backlight or will that not be needed?
2. Due to the smaller size of the panel will a 250w bulb assy be enough or should I go for the 400w?
3. Again due to the smaller size LCD should I use a finer pitch fresnel lens?
4. Has anyone built Alan's mini "Pico" projector?
That's all for the now. I once again off to see what I can find out about this LCD panel.

what brand flipdown screen are you using? have you tried calling for support from the manufacturer?

The unit is a Delphi Delco Electronics inc setup. It has Delco part numbers but I haven't been able to locate the specs by the part #'s.

I also have the balast, reflector, and condenser lens from a Mazda Millenium's foglamp assy. The reflector is a glass first surface mirror and the condenser lens is 2" in diameter. The condenser looks the same as the ones I've seen pictured here in the forum and the reflector is parabolic relative to the flat surface of the condenser. I haven't deciphered the balast info yet. The bulb blew out in this unit but there is replacements available although mazda only sells the complete unit as stocking high pressure bulbs at the dealer level isn't a good idea. I'm not sure of the color spectrum or lumens of the bulb but I'm wondering if a 12v HP bulb will be enough to power a projector image. It would be cool to have the PJ be completely 12v. That would make it the perfect tailgating accessory.

I found the unit. I should have been looking under the Ford part #. Still no spec's yet but maybe I'll find something going in this direction. What I didn't realise is that it has a retail price tag of almost $900. And that's at an online wholesaler. Maybe I should pop it back together and sell it on E-bay.
