Youch! Didn't mean to start a big argument. Never even heard of LCOD lol. If it's more than 2000 bucks than count me out.

Personal Choice is DLP, Im still amused that soo many mirrors can move so quickly lol. Lcos looks promising. CRT is old, I wouldn't be able to use it becuase of Burn In problems.

Personally, I think in the 200o dollar range CRT would be your best bet as far as picture quality goes.
But that depends on you.
To have a CRT, you need to not be limited by space, as yes they are big(100 lbs plus).
Also you should be somewhat technically inclined, as you will need to converge the unit when you set it up, and periodically agin throughout it's life.
But, if you have the space for a CRT, you won't be sorry if you get one. Everyone I know who's ever seen a standard LCD PJ side by side with a CRT sees the difference immediately. CRT's tend to blow them away.
But yes, they are big and not exactly portable, and once you have it set up it's best not to move it. I wouldn't say they're fragile, as their typical intended purpose was industrial. They were made for boardrooms, bars, etc. And at original costs of well over 20 grand for some models, how could they have been made with anything but top quality components. I can't think that in an industry where the current desire is to give the best picture for the least money, that they are using all the best components they can, but the least expensive.

I DO generally prefer digital technology, and this is the sole basis of some arguments against against CRT. But my eyes aren't lying. I don't believe there's a $2000 LCD PJ on the planet that can touch a nice low hours used CRT in the same price range.

Get a nice low hours Barco 808 and you won't be sorry.

Or better yet, take your $2000 buck, and get involved on the forums and build yourself a PJ. Nothing will beat the satisfaction of using a PJ you built yourself. And with that budget, you could build a 16:9 PJ, AND buy yourself some nice A/V components to go with it.

That's just my two cents on this *****y thread. (LCD vs CRT always turns into a battle around here, anyone else noticed that?)

I agree faith..I don't know why...it also happens on AVS too lol I stay out of them, but sometimes they follow you :/

What CRT do you have faith?
I think a Barco 808 would be a AMAZING start for a home theater but I've never seen on at 2,000$ they are one of the most saught after CRTs and tend to go 3K$ and up on ebay and its 5-6k$ on crtcinema.com I would get one I could afford it lol

in general my own choice is CRT over anything but I play games on my LCD panels.LCD/DLP whatever you choose its all good as long as the user can afford the bulbs and stuff.

I don't have a CRT personally, but have been researching and seriously considering one for the past 5 yrs or so. In the process I have seen alot of diff projectors.
Then I came across these forums, and have decided that until I get a house, a DIY LCD is the way to go for me.
But once I get a house it'll be a whole different story. I can't wait for that. In the meantime an LCD will be sufficient, and better than my dinky *** TV by far.

I've never seen a crt in action, only pics. They look great, but dlp is the way to go if you want simplicity, small size and ease of use. The onlt time i see a rainbow is when i move my eyes too fast on a white on black scene. Screen door- virtually gone. Defocus it a touch and it almost compleately melts away-except mabye on video games and computer stuff(small text). They also don't sufffer from burn in. In my opinion, and it is just mine, it is the best unit for a beginner. I won't go into why 'cause dlp is not a DIY technology, this is an avs discussion.

more on the diy front...wait i sold out and bought an x1...

Ace, what are the other 2 types of lcd tech, 1. transmittive, 2. LCOS, 3and 4???? Just courius.
