I used a sheet of drywall painted white, before that I used
black out cloth, and at one time I used a white shower curtain

black out cloth was the better screen - I also tried plastic bathroom
paneling - black out cloth still did better

I use what is called rubber backed blackout curtain material. Slightly stretchy so it is easy to stretch over a light weight frame. It has a slightly greyish/off white colour and works really well.

I don't suppose you'd be able to test the polarisation quality of this material? I'm debating if it's worth swapping out my current monitor in the projector with a passive 3D monitor... but I don't currently have a screen that reflects the polarised light so it won't work. How much did your material cost and where did you get it if you don't mind me asking?
