Yeah, I think the CDM-T style is the best, we can get at the moment. We'd made some expieriences with a CDM-SA/T 150 W lamp. The index SA is for short arc. It has a better light output than a common CDM-T. But's hard to find and not cheap. Around 70 Euro.
Heya buddy, ya ive seen those lamps before, they arent bad but im more inclined to look for somthing with a clear arc tube. There is a CDM-T style kicking around that has a CDM-T size and same specs with the clear arc tube, i just havnt had the time to look it up. There is also a 250w version aswell though they only last 2k hrs and are about 70euro aswell. Still cheaper then buying a commercial projector bulb if you ask me .

Do you think using a double ended bulb in an ellipsoidal reflector as that company does in their light source here would result in any kind of dark line in the projected image?

Nope cos the light comes from the sides and goes to a point (F2), anything that will shadow the sides will show in the image. You couldnt use a precondenser on that setup (probally why they havent) and you cant realy use one on mine of any great power, as the center will show.

Thats a good link you posted up there buddy, thats a good example to how i said we could use a double ended bulb in an elliptical reflector. It explains/shows exactly what i meant. The only problem is the focal has to be long, and we have to modd the bulb on a double ended 250w that we use today. Nothing serious.

isn't the one I_E_F used in his light engine a clear arc lamp? I believe he said it was an stripped HQI-T.

I looked at ebay.de, it runs below 20 euro.

What IEF did in stripping it is INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS and in all seriousness shouldn't be attempted if you value your health. As he also mentioned they do make a lamp similar to what his stripping achieved, buy that instead of following in IEF footsteps. Im sure IEF will agree with this also.

yezz, the arc has to be vertically mounted as in the pro's projectors. that will give the maximum output.

Phew, just finished the 95 page read (sporadically over 2 days), lots of good info in there. There is certainly plenty of room for improvement for my current OHP design (AI-1000 with 600W Halogen Bulb). Bravo Ace, some great innovations and research went into the project. Hope you don't mind if I utilize a few of the ideas. (it will be very different though, as it is based off of a 14" Kogi LCD)

Would really appreciate it if you could answer these two questions though:

What is a good source for cheap quality fresnels (the one from my OHP is about 30 years old, murkey, and warped )

Also as I'm trying to keep the cost down, student at the moment, would it be possible with the right cooling to temporarily use the 600W Halogen as the light source in a DIY projector? Or is that just too hot?

Thanks again for all the info! Keep up the good work!

There are couple of DIY stores you can buy fresnels from. many of them were setup by members of this forum. lumenlab.com, diybuildergroup.com, diyprojectorcompany.com, etc. they sell 15"x 15" fresnels for about $30. you will find it is much more expensive from other sources.

I still have a few HMI 575w lamps. although it is double ended. but the length is well within the f2. It should be cheap if I can get hold of YWH. but the ballast is too expansive ( I actually bought a cheap ballast from YWH, but it is way too heavy to let someone bring it across the pacific ocean.)
