Heya Trev:
As you know already - I've talked to you about the issues that others have brought up. I want to project an image of about 80" onto a wall from about 14 ft. away. I really don't know if this is possible - but I'm hoping so. I agree with Lori in the fact that I want to be able to put this thing in a cabinet and not have to ceiling mount the thing. If need be - I can re-arrange my room - but this would be the better fit for me. I'll be keeping track of this thread as I visit frequently during the day at work. Just let me know about what you'd know about this type of throw. I know I'm basically repeating what Lori already said - but my main reason for posting is just to congratulate you on the job that you're doing. There aren't many people in this world that would do what you're doing. So - I just want to say - THANKS! Keep up the great innovations - and don't feel too rushed! Thanks - AC |

Hi Trev,
First things first, congratulations with your magnificent design! Congratulations to everyone who made this forum into what it is now. I've read it with great interest for quite a long time and I'm joining in now as I am about to start on my own projector. Therefore, I'm interested in the parts you are ordering (today I believe?). Can you please send me a pricelist as well? regards, Erik |

Wow, Ace thats exactly what I wanted to hear 132" is actually 12 feet, but 80" screen would be awesome. If you would please get that e-mail when your going to order parts. I still have yet to read what a estimated total cost is on this project. Let me know
Thanks Squeeky |

Ace/Trev
I am using the DIY labs triplet. At the distance I mentioned, I'm hitting 10' (120") + It takes up the whole wall. The panel is a qa 1650 which has a viewable area of right at 8.5 inches wide. I have the lens before the mirror, but I don't think putting it after will make a difference. Sorry to muddy up your thread with a rash of questions about distance/size - I just meant to understand if your plans would accomplish this result. I am determined not to build from scratch until I have a proven method to accomplish the results I want at the distance I need. It's difficult to know how another panel with higher resolution, better contrast ratio, will perform at that distance, because we all know the limitations of the qa 1650 - at that distance and size resolution stinks and the screen door is awful. Although, I get a good picture at about 9-10' as seen here (which I think is an amazing accomplishment given what I have to work with) http://www.lovemyoldhome.com/projector but it's smak in the middle of the room, cables, cords etc and it is as ugly as all hec. I will see if I can wrap my brain around the calculator that was posted earlier. Thanks for the responses.

My brain works in inches and feet, like it's 16 - 12" tiles with 1/4" grout lines from one wall to the other. That = throw distance. The 2nd floor joists are on 16" centers, and if ceiling mounted, that's how much room I have to deal with since I intend to recess the bulk of a custom build into the ceiling with access from the room above on the 2nd floor. Time to blow the cobwebs out of the old noggin.

Do I need an ignitor for that CDMT bulb ???
In the wiring plan that Zerbos supplied (GE pdf link) - there is no ignitor (looking at the ballast section of the pdf) - is this right?? bal

If you use a normal magnetic ballast you'll need an ignitor. But I'm not an engineer - maybe ace can confirm that better... Roland |

Electronic ballasts (which are advisable over magnetic ballasts) don't need a separate ignitor.
