I've seen these films in action on some field laptops so that they can be seen more easily outside. Basically these films take light that is coming out of a laptop LCD panel in all directions and make it so that more of the light approaches only the viewer (narrows the angle of light). This condenses the light more and increases appearant output. In the case of DIY projectors, the fresnel makes it so that nearly all of the light is already being directed onto the back of the projection lens, so there's not really anything you can do to increase brightness except for at the light source itself and also possibly by splitting the fresnel lens.

If anyone wants to see this type of application in effect, then check out a rear-projection big screen TV. When you are viewing the image at dead center, the image is bright and evenly lit. As you move to the sides of the screen, the image gets dim very quickly. That's because projection TVs use a very similar application in the screen so that the CRTs don't have to be as high powered (saves a lot of money for them).
