Default lens diametre help

i have instructions to make a projector with a 7" screen which is fine and i can do. the only problem is i can't find a triplet lens that i can afford, also it requires a diametre of 135mm. would it be ok to use a magnifying glass.
if it was only 100mm would i lose part of the image
and would it be worth watching with a magnifying glass
