How to Fool or Trick an IN72 Projector into thinking the Bulb is inside...

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum and currently in desperate search of insight on this project that was worked on an Infocus X1 Projector:

Trick or fool DLP (SP4805) projector into thinking lamp is present.

I'm trying to do the same thing to a IN72 Projector. I've already taken apart the projector and found that all components and component layouts are very much just like the X1 projector though with minor differences (plastics, and a few additional pins on a certain connector that run from the ballast board.) I'm sure the same steps can be applied from that forum project onto this one. I have been reading the X1's service guide (since I can't find any service guides for the IN72.) and found alot of useful information on how they work and voltages. Anyway I've searched everywhere for insight and figured this was my last resort. anyone who can or has anything that can help will be very much appreciated

I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a cheap projector with a burnt bulb from ebay and doing the same thing...

I found a few sites where others have done similar projects. Looks like the Europeans have been doing this for some time! Unfortunately these sites are in other languages. UPDATE!!

I managed to perform the task. It's pretty much exactly the same thing that was done on the X1. So with a bit of logic, the X1 service guide, And a tester I was able to pull it off...

I will break it down into steps starting with take apart.

CAUTION!!:

I did this because my projector was out of warranty In no way or form am I saying to do this If your projector is covered under warranty and you still have lamp life on your bulb. i'm not responsible if you damage your projector so do this at your own risk!

TAKE APART:

1. Remove Base Mount screws. (That is if you still have the projector on its original base swivel mount)

2. Remove all Bottom side cover Silver screws.

3. Open Lamp housing cover and remove the 3 Silver screws located on the front.

4. Flip projector top upright. Slide Silver Side Panels back ( the ones that say infocus on the side) and pull off.

5. Remove side screws from side bracket and pull side Brackets off

6. Flip open top case (careful with the control wire connected to the control panel)

PROJECT:

(USE X1 PROJECT PICS FOR REFERENCE ON LOCATION OF ECA CONTROLLER WIRE AND THERMAL SWITCH)

ok now the fun part... If you have been reading up on the X1 Project by "ChrisRR" link I left on the first post and compare pictures you will see how similar everything is....

Now step one is to fool the thermal switch (found on top of lamp housing) into thinking there is heat coming from the bulb. That is done by applying a 2 ohm resistor right on top of it.

Step two is pulling the control wire coming from the ballast board to the controller ECA board from 3.3v to 1.5v making the ECA controller think the Lamp is ignited.


Steps.

1. Soldier 2ohm resistor onto thermal switch.

2. Locate pin 14 on ECA Controller Cable.

3. Attach a wire from pin 14 onto GROUND. (I used ground coming from a mounting screw found in one of the corners of the ballast board.)

And that is that!!

the great part of all this is that this setup can be done on all IN7x family of projectors

CONCLUSION:

As for lighting solutions.... well it seems theres alot of light loss when applying an alternative lighting solution from what I've learned from all of this. There's the color wheel then the DMD array then the throw back mirror and finally the lens. Keep in mind not to go based on what the projector says on lighting output i.e.: My projector (IN72) states upto 900 ANSI Lumens so I originally went based on that thought without knowing the bulb is actually alot higher.

Not much success was accomplished using a 1000 Lumen 6000k True White LED bought on ebay nor using a 3500 Lumen Car HID 6500k Hyper White Bulb with original bulb reflector....

So I just decided to rebuild the bulb and went on this site http://diypro.xiaofish.us/
and purchased one. But I have yet to hear from them and I'm still waiting for the bulb

If anyone has any lighting solutions that have worked on these DLP Projectors please let me know...

thanks for the update! Looks like you have been busy!

was the auto light a "xenon"? It is a bummer to hear that it was not a acceptable replacement !

I read somewhere that the company you ordered your bulb from is having difficulty with the Chinese suppler. It has to do with the up coming Olympics...

and also I'm currently trying to work with the suppler directly via forum so lets see what happens...I really hope to get my projector working again...

Hynotech83 I just got this projector and I was going to use the xenon but you say its to dim what was the size you are trying to make it. What are you using now for the lamp source.

Trust me a xenon head lamp for a car will not produce the correct amount of light it needs to shine at all....

Believe me when i say I had to shut all the lights off just to see a faint glow on my t-shirt !!....

Remember native xenon is 3 to 5000 lumens but the actual native bulb of that projector is about 24000 lumens..... Talk about light loss huh?

As for my alternative I went ahead and bought a bare bulb from YWH!! at the link I left a few posts up top... and rebuilt it but.... either the bulb is not working or my PJ is'nt producing enough juice... idk at this point... all I know I spent alot of time and money....and I would of been better off just buying the dam thing retail.

I hope this brings food for thought...and for your wallet....

I know how you feel. Where did you get your xenon HID bulbs from and are you selling them now?? Look on the BRIGHT side you have learned a lot and you are helping others I hope you get something worked out with YWH

Hynotech, have you had anymore luck with replacing the bulb from ywh? I am thinking about ordering one, but nervous at the same time. Also is there anything against using multiple briight light LEDs rather than a single one? Been bouncing this around in my head for awhile, and I am very intimidated to say the least.

Hi Folks,
Sounds like good projects on relamping IN72s. I am having great results on the X1 using the jys/dc from YWH. Lamps start very quickly which is good. I have relamped LP340/LP350 which also work great with jys/dc and LP500 & lp530 using both jys/dc and more expensive BVM?. Only prob with them is power supplies are not very strong and sometimes takes 2-3 tries to light lamps on REV 1 boards unless you have original power boards they start right away.
Next project for me is to relamp X2,X3 Infocus. So far lamps light fast but not bright enough.
BTW, YWH will exchange lamps for you if yours is not working. He may have a brighter lamp to try also.
