Well,
on my Nak, after 17 years of constant use , the shaft of spindle motor (RF-310TB-11400 from Mabuchi) has now some play horizontally. I did not get any replacement for it, the shaft lenght is not longer produced (or available). Now I think about using an ultraprecise ball bearing (or something like it) , which carries the spindle and then can be connected to a motor. (So to say the goal of the analogue DIYers). The idea is to keep vibration and horizontal tolerance of the disk platter low and therefor give laser tracking lesser errors to correct. The shaft diameter the bearing has to - well, bear? - is exactly 2mm. Any ideas or suggestions where to look for bearings and shafts and which types could suit well? All the best, Salar |

Ball bearing gives more noise. Preferably use a bronze-steel bearing. Seek for a toy-motor replacement, most easy to do.

Look at a company called CBC, (consolidated Bearing Company) I used to use their bearings in small Gyroscope rotors that ran at over 20,000 rpm.
They are uuually not metric sizes but I'm sure they do metric versions or at least adapter bushes. Ball bearings will rumble a little bit, as long as your laser can track the disc without errors the vibration doesn't matter. |
