I'd like to build a very simple DAC to be used as an improvement to my cruddy onboard audio. I'm not a world-class SMD soldering expert, but I think I could manager a single IC.
This will be in a "flash drive" form factor - in other words, I'm putting it in the enclosure of a dead flash drive, with a USB connector on one end and a headphone jack on the other. |

Texas Instruments PCM2700 or PCM2900, whichever you prefer.
Can be found in any low cost USB DAC. Cheers. |

I can't actually make out the numbers on the DAC chip -- the red spotch doesn't help...
