Yes, that is unfortunate.

I'd like to buy some of these to have a lifetime stash for future projects.

Where is a good place to get, say, 10 of the higher spec version?

I just checked availability in the UK.

Rs and Farnell have stocks of the PCM1702

I saw on another board that the manufacturer was changing to a Lead free version of the 1704.

Default The fickle finger having written, moves on ...

... to the next generation.

I'm suprised you guys didn't check out TI / Burr-Brown for alternate parts.

http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folder...t/pcm1796.html ( & http://focus.ti.com/lit/ug/sleu057/sleu057.pdf ) ... looks like the replacement for the PCM170x series.

It looks like TI, as long as they are getting the lead out, went ahead and upgraded the family ... No ??

alt reference: http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folder...t/pcm1798.html ... a pin replacement for PCM1794

Let us work on some basic reading skills...

"Not recommended for new designs" does not mean "obsolete". It means that the manufacturer is wanting to direct you to new part numbers but has not totally stopped production. It _IS_ and indication that it may be obsoleted in the future.

Virtually everyone has switched their product lines to "Pb-free" but this does not mean they have changed their part numbers. This has nothing to do with the IC die itself; merely with the leadframe.
