I'll second the nomination for a networked player. It's much cheaper (assuming you have a PC and a wireless router already), and very convenient.

Well another option could be the Apple iPod with the new Wadia dock - this should give you pretty good performance using Apple Lossless (skip AAC at all bit rates for this - sorry) Including 160GB iPod Classic and the dock should run you about $800, add external dac of choice and you are set. Have not tried this yet. (I do have a Classic 160GB and as it stands it is not good enough.)
I run a media server, (thread detailing elsewhere on diyaudio) a Peter Daniels inspired variation of the shigaclone, and a Sony SACD SCD-777ES for digital sources - all quite good for their respective media. The server is very good in comparison to either of the other sources. (J River media player software, ASIO, and an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI sound card running WinXP Pro)
