How play tape through a computer

I'm on a linux system and I am wondering how I can transfer tape onto a computer, I've tried to do the whole patch cord thing through the back but to no avail...any ideas?

It should be possible to record using the line input jack on your computer's sound card. You'll probably need to use the "mixer" controls to select that input and set levels.

HarddiskOgg is an elegantly simple audio recorder, that you could run it on the kind of PC you can buy in a thrift store for $25 (like a Pentium 1).

As for troubleshooting, first thing is to get the audio coming in to the sound card. Play something on the tape deck, then mess with the sound card's mixer controls until you can hear it through the computer's "line out" (going to your speakers or headphones). Then set the mixer to kill all other audio sources for recording (so you don't end up with noise from an open mic input, or system beeps and bells). Hopefully someone with better Linux experience can be more specific...
