I have one of these CD players and I am very happy with it. Or at least I was unitl I pulled the lid off it last weekend. It is beautifully built inside with copper colored covers on the torriod and servo. The main PCB does contain a lot of average parts though - NE5532 for the filters (x6), 7815/7915 regs and cheap looking NP electo caps and filter caps in the PS. Seems like a lot of upgrade potential here. Anyone tried upgrading one yet?
Maybe OPA2134 for the filters, 2937/2990 for the regs and a sprinkling of Blackgates migth help? |

Hi!
Unfortunatelly, the power trafo it`s not a toroid, it`s actually an el-core type. If you are happy with the sound, by changing some of the components like op-amps and capacitors, the new sound may become unpleasant for you. It`s my case with my Marantz cd67se (modded with opa2134 and Nippon-Chemicon caps).

Use OP275 for Marantz. They match.

Adinica - If I remove the NE5532s, I will replace them with sockets so I can try many different opamps like OPA627 maybe. Also, I can revert to NE5532 if things soudn worse.

careful now... 5532 is dual, 627 single.
I would imagine the cambridge stuff to be voiced and designed so do one thing at a time so you can go back. Not all technically better bits sound better in all applications.... |

I am desperately trying to repair my cambridge audio 640 V2 CD player.
I have just started a new thread below though this one discusses mods you guys may be able to help Cambridge Audio 640C No audio output PLEASE HELP! The player powers on, reads CDs and is doing all its supposed to do apart from not delivering any output on the analogue output. I can only assume the fault is with DAC board as the transport seems fine even with the DAC bard removed. The DAC has 9 regulators 7x 7805CV with a 7815CV/7915CV pair which got very hot (before the fault ) All these reglators do not have any heatsinks and I feel will fail with time in these units. I have replaced all these and can now hear the output relay (mute??) click on power on and switching tracks which it had stopped doing when the audio went BUT I still have no audio output. I have now replaced most capacitors apart from the 2 big smothing caps 4700µF and 6 Non polars which I do not have but still no joy. There are 4 small transistors by the relay 2 each of S8050 and C9012 which seem hard to source not that I am sure they need replacing. I would rather replace a couple of items in one go rather than removing and testing 1 at a time especially with cheap parts which cambridge audio have used. Any suggestions ? |
