AKAi A-DAM ADDA converters

Hi all,

just came across THIS thread and it partially answered my question.

Actually, I also own an AKAI recording machine, the AKAI DR1200 (12 tracks on Video8 tapes).

The A/D - D/A converters ase said to sound pretty 'analog' - and for that beeing very good (this was a professional machine back in the end-eightees).

The recording head of the machine is broken and I'd like to use the ADDA converters. There IS a digital out, but I can only switch to either digital (I assume in AND out) or analog.

In addition, the AKAI format of saving the digital information to tape is pretty proprietary, but documentation is, to a certain extent, available.

There IS a unit which is able to transfer 2 of the (max) 12 tracks on the tape to AES/EBU or SPDIF - Format.

So it seems, that I would have to record everything on tape (digitally) an then use the converter unit for transferring tracks 2 by 2 to some other backup-unit (preferably a computer harddrive).

The bad thing about that is, that I can't get away without the tape.

My idea was to use the ADDA converters as such and transfer the data to another medium.

The machine is pretty old and for that has still 'old' electronic parts (though AKAI custom chips are to find on the converter boards).

What kind of informantion do YOU guys here need to tell me if it is possible to use the converters on their own ?
There are three boards, each of which (I guess) converts 4 audio signals.

This makes no sense to me. How do you plan to record to tape if the record head is broken ? Or if you are in a postion to record to tape, why not record to a different medium?

Other than that, you will need to provide more information about the innards of the machine.
