Default Is external DSP needed for CS4258?

Hi.

I'm looking for a spdif decoder to give me 6 channels.

I found the CS42528 which will be perfect if I don't need a DSP to run it. I see there are connections for a DSP but all I need is the SPDIF decoder, analog outs and the volume control provided with the chip.

I plan on using an ATMEL ATMEGA32 or ATMEGA128 to control it.

An suggestions?

You will not need a DSP to run it but you will not be able to use all the dacs at once if you use the internal spdif decoder.

With a DSP you can get multiple channels and with 3 external SPDIF decoders and some other stuff you can also get multiple channels

I'm looking to get 5.1 sound from the SPDIF out on the motherboard in my PC.

3 x Stereo Channels won't do.

Is there any other solutions to have a look at?

PS do you get audio DSPs or all they all the same?

Is your MB capable of AC3/DTS over SPDIF. If it is you then need an AC3/DTS decoder. If not, do you have three SPDIF outputs?

Its only got 1 3-pin header on the motherboard.

I'm going to look at the specs online.

It's a P4M800-M7 A motherboard.
Not sure what chips it has on.

It uses a ALC655 chipset.

I'm downloading the datasheet now.

About the AC3/DTS, cant you just send raw PCM over the spdif port?

Raw decoded data is sent as pairs so 5.1 would need 3 SPDIF pairs. Undecoded multichannel AC3/DTS can be sent over one SPDIF pair.
